Introducción

En tiempos de avivamiento y renovación para la iglesia, el pueblo de Dios se regocija en la majestad y el esplendor de su gran Dios y Salvador, el Señor Jesucristo. Él lo llena todo en todo. Dios envía hombres al púlpito quienes exaltan las excelencias y glorias del Dios Trino, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Richard Sibbes escribió, “Si un hombre tiene el Espíritu de Dios, su forma de vida será en ascenso y celestial; su mente está en las cosas de Dios, y no se arrastra aquí abajo”.¹  Eso es tan cierto para el predicador como lo es para el creyente. Cuando el verdadero avivamiento Bíblico viene, el pueblo de Dios es bendecido con un ministerio ordenado por Dios: centrado en Dios, obediente a Dios y para la gloria de Dios.

Pero la antítesis del ministerio ordenado por Dios es el ministerio hecho por mano de hombre. Keith Daniel nos dijo en el 2007 que, “la única gran tragedia que el mundo enfrenta hoy es un cristianismo comprometido”. Yo dije ‘Amén’ cuando escuché esta declaración de este hombre de Dios: nunca se han dicho palabras tan ciertas. Y yo les propondría en esta hora que la única gran maldición que puede venir sobre cualquier nación que ha conocido alguna vez el Evangelio, es algo con el nombre de ministerio hecho por mano de hombre. Se ha esparcido como una plaga y se puede encontrar en todas partes en nuestras iglesias de siglo 21.

Este mensaje ha nacido con mucho dolor, lágrimas, sincera tristeza y enojo. Si usted ha venido aquí para ‘cosquillas en mis orejas’, ‘sentirme bien’, ‘suavizar mi ego’, ‘bendígame’, por un mensaje centrado en el hombre, se puede ir ahora mismo. No he venido a predicar a cabras; no tengo tiempo para cizaña. Estoy aquí para hablarles a hombres y mujeres que aman a Dios y que están genuinamente preocupados por la gloria del Dios viviente en esta generación.

En este sermón, voy a obedecer la regla de la ciencia médica- que antes de que usted sana la herida y le aplica ungüento, tiene que exponerla y analizarla por lo que es. Dios es promotor del duro realismo. Así que vamos a abrir nuestras Biblias en el libro de Judas y leer los primeros 4 versículos. Si usted lo desea puede acompañarme allí.²

Amados, por la gran solicitud que tenía de escribiros acerca de nuestra común salvación, me ha sido necesario escribiros exhortándoos que contendáis ardientemente por la fe que ha sido una vez dada a los santos. Porque algunos hombres han entrado encubiertamente, los que desde antes habían sido destinados para esta condenación, hombres impíos, que convierten en libertinaje la gracia de nuestro Dios, y niegan a Dios el único soberano, y a nuestro Señor Jesucristo.”

Judas

El tema completo del libro de judas está simplificado en una palabra: apostasía. El hedor a decadencia es percibido potencialmente por medio de la lectura de esta epístola de inspiración divina. Es el único libro del Nuevo Testamento dedicado exclusivamente para advertencia a los santos de Dios acerca de la depravación espiritual y moral que enfrentaría la iglesia antes del regreso de Cristo. Su mensaje sigue siendo tan claro, poderoso y relevante como lo fue en el tiempo en que se escribió.

En el pasaje que acabamos de leer, Judas, quien creemos que fue uno de los hermanos físicos del Señor Jesús, se urge a exhortar a los santos a contender fervientemente por la fe por causa de ciertos hombres que  habían “entrado encubiertamente” –hombres impíos, que transformaron la gracia de Dios en una licencia para pecar, y quienes negaban al Señor Jesús con su falsa vida. Ellos eran ministros ordenados por hombres que predicaban un mensaje ordenado por hombres.

Quiero mostrarles hoy, por medio de las Escrituras, que un ministro hecho por mano de hombre es tres cosas. Número uno, él es un actor o un hipócrita. Número dos, él es un cobrador de impuestos. Número tres, él es un prostituto. Y después de nuestro análisis del ministerio hecho por mano de hombre les sugeriría cómo podemos lidiar con esta tontería en esta perversa y degenerada era.

Oremos, que Dios nos de Su luz y revelación en lo que respecta a Su Palabra en este día.

I. –Un Actor/ hipócrita “algunos hombres han entrado encubiertamente”(v.3)

El ministro ordenado por los hombres es un actor y un hipócrita, un cobrador de impuestos y un prostituto. En primer lugar, hablemos del actor o el hipócrita. Actuar, en su forma original es el arte de la decepción e hipocresía. La persona que actúa pretende ser algo o alguien que no es. Si un predicador llega a la puerta de una iglesia y proclama, “Yo soy un falso profeta, ¡déjenme predicar en el púlpito!” ¿Quién sería tan tonto para dejarle?                 El ministro ordenado por los hombres con un Evangelio hecho por hombres viene secretamente. El versículo 3 menciona que algunos hombres “han entrado encubiertamente”. La amenaza desde afuera de la iglesia nunca fue tan peligrosa como la perversión que se levantó desde dentro de ella. Vendrán disfrazados de ovejas pero por dentro son lobos rapaces. Pablo dijo a los Efesios, “Porque yo sé que después de mi partida entrarán en medio de vosotros lobos rapaces, que no perdonarán al rebaño. Y de vosotros mismos se levantarán hombres que hablen cosas perversas para arrastrar tras sí a los discípulos” (Hechos 20:29-30). El lobo es un hipócrita- él pretende ser una oveja. Es un actor.

Si había algo que el Señor Jesús condenaba más que cualquier otra cosa en Su ministerio, era la falsa religión- una espiritualidad espuria. Él reservó sus amenazas más tremendas para los simuladores, los actores y los hipócritas. En Mateo 6 él habla de actores- personas que oran para ser oídas, ayunan para ser admiradas y dan para ser vistas. Jesús no tiene tiempo para actores ni nadie más que se mete con esa tontería. Él dijo, “¡Ellos ya tienen su recompensa!” El hipócrita siempre hace cosas para ser visto y notado. Si el actor no es el centro de atención, él nunca estará feliz- hará rabietas y echará humo y le hará saber eso a todo el mundo. Todo el avance de su vida está centrado en él mismo; su ministerio es para ganar reputación propia, fama, riquezas y el respeto de muchos. Él actúa santo cuando tiene que actuar santo, pero su máscara de justicia es un maquillaje barato puesto sobre una vida de necedad y liviandad desperdiciada. Los payasos llevan máscara, y no se supone que usted deba tomarlos en serio. La Biblia dice que la esperanza de los hipócritas perecerá (Job 8:13).

Él hará lo que sea necesario para llegar al púlpito, y cuando llega ahí, su actuación se convierte en su dios. Él aprende cada acción, sabe cuándo levantar sus manos y cuándo bajarlas, sabe dónde hacer el énfasis con su voz para lograr un ‘aleluya’, ‘amén’ o una ronda de aplausos de los oyentes. Mueve las masas con facilidad y sabe todos los trucos del libro. Dijeron una vez a un evangelista amigo mío, “Si te quieres ver bien espiritual, llama a la gente a que venga cerca del altar y diles que levanten sus manos, con sus manos levantadas ellos están fuera de balance, ¡así que sólo debes empujarlos de sus frentes y se caerán!” Decepción, hipocresía, falsedad, suciedad- ¡y todo en el nombre del Dios viviente! Si Dios quiere que un hombre se caiga al suelo con la sensación de Su gloria, Él lo puede hacer, ¡no el hombre!

El actor pretende ser algo que no es. Él predica una espiritualidad que no posee. Está en bancarrota. El actor también está fuera de contacto con la realidad. Él vive en un mundo en donde él es el centro y Dios es su pequeño títere. El actor no se lamenta por la falta de santidad y poder en la iglesia, porque la iglesia solo está allí para servir a sus propósitos- no los de Dios. El infierno puede estar rodeando su generación, pero él continúa jugando sus juegos religiosos con una gran sonrisa en su cara. Él ha sido seducido por su rol que le deja inconsciente a todo lo que le rodea.

La Palabra de Dios es una carga poderosa que aplasta al verdadero hombre o mujer de Dios. Malaquías 1:1 dice, “Carga de la Palabra del Señor contra Israel, por mano de Malaquías”(Reina-Valera versión Antigua). Esa misma carga vino sobre Habacuc, Zacarías, Nahúm y todos los profetas. La palabra profética es un peso aplastador sobre los hombros del siervo del Señor quien no pude resistirla. Descansa sobre él como una pitón que lentamente lo ahorca hasta la muerte. ¡Debe ser sacada afuera!

¡La Palabra debe ser predicada! No puede ser retenida. No le dejará dormir de noche. Consume al hombre de Dios y lo va devorando. Jeremías no pudo controlar el fuego. Amós no tuvo otra opción sino predicar la carga pesada de la Palabra de Dios. Es una Palabra  de santidad, pureza y arrepentimiento. Cuando el ministro ordenado por Dios predica, viene la convicción. Pero entonces el actor viene al púlpito a terminar la reunión con una canción que haga sentir bien a la gente para que nadie se vaya a casa con lágrimas en sus ojos y un corazón quebrantado. Después de todo, no queremos que nadie se moleste: ¿cierto?

El verdadero esclavo de Cristo guiado por el Espíritu de Dios ve el desastre que necesita ser arreglado, y le causa dolor. El actor no- sus llamativas gafas de sol bloquean su visión. Él no es consciente de la herida que necesita tratamiento. Una persona así no está dispuesta a poner su vida en línea para ser usado por Dios. Él clama, “Paz, paz” y no hay paz. “Y curaron el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo con liviandad” (Jeremías 8:11). Ellos dicen que todo está bien cuando no es así. Ellos dicen que estamos en avivamiento cuando tenemos la misma cantidad de jovencitas embarazadas en la iglesia como fuera de ella. ¡La tasa de criminalidad es más alta que nunca! Nuestras cárceles están llenas hasta rebosar. Quién sabe cuán grande es el porcentaje de creyentes que son adictos a la pornografía? Y en medio de todo esto ellos claman- ¡avivamiento, avivamiento, avivamiento! Esto no es avivamiento! Si esto es avivamiento yo no lo quiero, Si esto es avivamiento nuestras calles serían diferentes. Las cosas cambiarían. ¡Las familias empezarían a funcionar otra vez! Las personas empezarían a vivir correctamente, vestirse correctamente, hablar correctamente y caminar correctamente. El temor de Dios caería sobre nuestras ciudades.

He visto a los tales llamados siervos del Señor hablando de los peligros que enfrentan en el campo misionero, contando historias tristes para sacar el dinero de la gente- y una vez logrado el objetivo, se pasan todo el año comiendo helado y chateando en el internet, coqueteando con cualquier persona atractiva que se encuentran. ¡Actores! ¡Hipócritas! ¡Nuestra era llama a hombres y mujeres santos llenos del fuego de Dios!

II.- Un cobrador de impuestos “y se lanzaron por lucro en el error de Balaam” (v.11) (Reina-Valera 1960)

El ministro hecho por mano de hombre es un actor. Él pretende ser algo que no es y como consecuencia, vive fuera de contacto con la realidad. El ministro hecho por mano de hombre es un cobrador de impuestos. Judas 11 dice, “y se lanzaron por lucro en el error de Balaam por recompensa”. El término “se lanzaron por lucro” implica que nada lo detendrá en su búsqueda egoísta. Es el mismo término usado en Hechos 1:18 cuando habla de las entrañas de Judas que se “derramaron”. Nada podría detenerlas. Un cobrador de impuestos le usaría por lo que pueda ganar de usted. Usted es un medio para su fin. Él ama el dinero y nada más. Continuamente busca su propio beneficio. 2 Pedro 2:3 nos advierte, “y por avaricia harán mercadería de vosotros con palabras fingidas”.

Su único interés es autoalimentarse, y se aprovecharán de las ovejas para hacerlo. Su mensaje completo es uno que ganará el apoyo financiero de la gente- prosperidad, felicidad, sanidad, salud y riquezas. Ellos sólo le dicen a la gente lo que la gente quiere oír. Prometen una vida libre de problemas, vida de éxito y ascenso- y relajarse ¡y observar a miles de personas entrando a la iglesia! Cualquier tonto puede predicar esa necedad! Usted no tiene que nacer de nuevo para compartir estos principios. Esa es la forma del mundo- sin esfuerzo, sin dolor y sin compromiso. Sólo confiese algo positivamente y observe como se vuelve realidad. Estos pastores no están buscando a Dios; están buscando bienes propios. Los cobradores de impuestos en los tiempos Bíblicos tomaban más de lo debido. Ellos eran odiados porque estafaban a su propia gente. Roma puso un precio sobre cada cabeza, y los cobradores de impuestos no sólo tomaban lo que se debía a Roma, sino que también añadían algo para su propia riqueza. En el momento en que Jesús llama a Mateo, Mateo dejó ese negocio atrás. ¡La salvación había llegado! ¡Él ahora era un discípulo de Jesús! No más mentiras; no más engaño; no más el aprovecharse de personas indefensas. Lo primero que hizo cuando empezó a seguir a Jesús fue organizarle una gran cena- cómo podría ser esto? ¡Mateo, el cobrador de impuestos! ¡El que le robaba a los suyos! Ahora el prepara una fiesta para su Maestro. El egoísmo había sido aniquilado en su corazón. Era de otro Reino- fue trasladado al reino de la luz, el gozo de seguir a Cristo.                                                          Zaqueo fue otro- aunque él tenía más autoridad que Mateo. Él era “el jefe entre los publicanos”(Lucas 19:2). Los cobradores de impuestos le daban cuenta a él. ¿Y adivine qué? “él era rico” (v. 2). Pero cuando la salvación llegó a su casa, la primera cosa que dijo fue, “He aquí, Señor, la mitad de mis bienes doy a los pobres; y si en algo he defraudado a alguno, se lo devuelvo cuadruplicado” (Lucas 19:8 RV1995). El verdadero arrepentimiento obra restitución. Zaqueo mostró por los frutos de su arrepentimiento que había entrado en una relación salvadora con Cristo. Hay dos reinos- el mundo o el cielo. ¿A cuál sirve usted? ¿Por cuál vive? ¿Con cuál sueña?

Cristo habló mucho acerca del dinero porque Él sabía que era la más grande amenaza para la verdadera alabanza a Dios. “No os hagáis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el orín corrompen, y donde ladrones minan y hurtan; sino haceos tesoros en el cielo, donde no la polilla ni el orín corrompen, y donde ladrones no minan ni hurtan. Porque donde está vuestro tesoro, allí estará también vuestro corazón” (Mateo 6: 19-21). Yo no recuerdo la última vez que escuché un sermón basado en este pasaje en la iglesia moderna. Usted le dice a los padres que sus hijos no están portándose bien en el colegio, y eso no podría importarles menos. Pero dígales que ellos están desperdiciando su dinero si sus hijos se comportan de esa manera y ahí si escuchan y toman nota. La razón por la cual el 95% de la población en esta nación se levantó esta mañana fue para salir y hacer dinero. Yo no estoy diciendo que hay algo malo con las riquezas, pero son peligrosas cuando ellas se convierten en el motivo de nuestra vida por encima de Dios.

El siervo del Señor es generoso porque tiene una perspectiva eterna. Pero el cobrador de impuestos está concentrado en el aquí y ahora. Él abre puertas para él mismo, se auto promueve y predica por popularidad. Su religión es una religión humanista- él no predica porque le quema por dentro un ‘así dice el Señor’ sino porque él sabe que hay una generosa ofrenda que recibirá después de su sermón. Sólo está interesado en predicarle a grandes números, aunque usará rebaños pequeños para llegar a su destino. Él construye su propio reino, no el de Dios. Hageo 1:4-5 dice, “¿Es para vosotros tiempo, para vosotros, de habitar en vuestras casas artesonadas, y esta casa está desierta? Pues así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: Meditad bien sobre vuestros caminos”. Un predicador como ese vendería su alma para presentarse en televisión o proyectar su mensaje en internet. Ellos dirían de todo; irían a cualquier lugar; estrecharían la mano de cualquiera, sólo por poner un poco de dinero en sus bolsillos. El orgullo es algo tan sutil que puede llegar a convertirse en la fuerza que mueve la vida de cualquier predicador: ¡cualquier cosa por un nombre! ¡Cualquier cosa por la fama! ¡Cualquier cosa por las riquezas! ¡Cualquier cosa por ganar un gran nombre en la industria de sermones!

¿Cuántas amistades y familias se han perdido en la lucha por la fama? Y al final del día, ¿a dónde le lleva esto? ¿Qué es lo que logra? ¿Qué bien podría hacerle el mundo entero si usted pierde su alma? ¿Su ministerio de CD lo salvará en el Día del Juicio?

En vez de tiempo pasado en oración, la iglesia del siglo 21 está perdiendo su tiempo en planear esquemas y estrategias en un intento de llegar a alguna parte. Pero la tragedia es que llegar a algún sitio sin Dios ¡es llegar a ninguna parte! 2 de Pedro 2:15 dice, “Han dejado el camino recto, y se han extraviado siguiendo el camino de Balaam hijo de Beor, el cual amó el premio de la maldad”. El premio de la maldad lo llevará por mal camino; el premio de la justicia le guiará a vivir eternamente y a la gloria del Señor Jesucristo.

III. Un prostituto “No obstante, de la misma manera también estos soñadores mancillan la carne, rechazan la autoridad” (v. 8)

El ministro ordenado por mano de hombre es un actor o un hipócrita, un cobrador de impuesto y un prostituto. Como en Sodoma y Gomorra, el ministro ordenado por mano de hombres mancilla o contamina la carne. Habla palabras perversas y vive una vida pervertida. Las prostitutas ganan su dinero en la cama, desgraciándose a ellas mismas y a aquellos a quienes ellas infectan. Cualquier tipo de conducta sexual fuera del matrimonio está completamente prohibida por la Biblia. Las prostitutas viven en la cama, por lo tanto siempre están medio dormidas. Dios habló en contra de los falsos profetas en los días de Jeremías, “yo he oído lo que aquellos profetas dijeron, profetizando mentira en mi nombre, diciendo: Soñé, soñé”(Jeremías 23:25). Cuando los sueños y las tal llamadas revelaciones son exaltadas por encima de las Sagradas Escrituras, usted puede escribir “Icabod” sobre dicho movimiento “La gloria se ha ido”(1 de Samuel 4:21). Si su visión o sueño no armoniza con la doctrina de las Escrituras, entonces puede olvidarse de eso.

La prostituta está sedada, drogada, medio dormida, ha estado con mil compañeros y está plagada de enfermedades. Ellos viven de noche porque la oscuridad odia la luz. La predicación directa de la Palabra de Dios es lo más odiado por el corazón carnal. Los pecadores no pueden resistir la grandeza de un Dios santo. Las personas se esconden en la oscuridad, y el ministro ordenado por mano de hombres esconde una vida secreta de pecado que mantiene oculta de los demás. Él está cubriendo una vida inicua que se niega a exponer a la luz de la Palabra de Dios.

Añoramos santidad en la iglesia en días en los que hasta la dignidad no es respetada. Yo he visto mujeres en reuniones vestidas como un pedazo de carne, dejándole nada a la imaginación. Usted esperaría eso de paganos en las calles, ¿pero en la iglesia del Dios viviente? Lo único que he visto que se emociona por un pedazo de carne es un perro- entonces ¿porqué en el nombre del Dios viviente usted se viste para atraer a los perros del infierno? ¡Jesús le dijo a la prostituta que se fuera y no pecara más! ( Juan 8:11).

No hay nada complicado acerca de la santidad- es lo más práctico que nos podamos imaginar. No se trata de sentarse en la cima de un poste o en medio del desierto por 10 años sin decir nada, con decenas de visiones místicas- una santidad verdadera es caminar en el fruto del Espíritu Santo, reflejando el amor y la santidad del Señor Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios. Un hombre de Dios iría a los lugares correctos actuaría correctamente, y lo mismo se aplica a las mujeres de Dios. Es así de simple. No es emoción. Ese es el ámbito del prostituto y de la carne. He visto hombres predicar con influencia y emoción, moviendo a los oyentes y ganando rondas de aplauso- pero en privado, sus vidas no son dignas de admiración. El sacerdote ex -Episcopal John Shelby Spong está enseñando que el apóstol Pablo era un homosexual reprimido. Cuando usted retuerce eso, cuando la teología homosexual es un movimiento en crecimiento- ¿qué tan lejos podremos estar de la Segunda Venida de Cristo?

Todo encaja en la iglesia prostituta. La protesta es sacada de Protestante. La prostituta se recuesta y toma todo lo que se le da. Si alguna vez hay una ilustración de nuestra situación religiosa, esa es. Prostitutas ponen un precio en sus cabezas. Yo conozco de algunos- llamados hombres de Dios que solo predicarían en lugares en donde se les paga miles de [libras]. Los pastores de Juárez (Méjico) me contaron que ya nadie va a predicar allá- ¿por qué no? Porque es peligroso, no hay dinero ni popularidad para el predicador.

La prostituta trata con la carne. Los animales actúan por instinto y así es con el sensual que no tiene el Espíritu (Judas 19). Los tales llamados creyentes cuyos ojos no cesan de pecar, traen toda clase de mundanalidad y necedad a la iglesia. Tenemos toda clase de truco, publicidad y payasadas- Luces ostentosas, iglesias diseñadas como tabernas, música de alabanza estilo disco y colores brillantes. ¡Revistas Cristianas con portadas que parecen pornográficas! ¡Hasta los impíos se están burlando de nosotros! Si usted usa esa basura para traer personas a la iglesia, entonces tendrá que utilizar esa misma basura para mantenerlos en ella. Tengo noticias para usted: la única atracción para la iglesia es la cruz de Jesucristo- nada más ni nada menos. Y si no viene en el suelo de la cruz, no tiene lugar aquí. La cruz mata el hedor de este mundo.

¿Dónde aprendimos a desconectarnos espiritualmente? Personas vienen al altar con lágrimas en sus ojos y cinco minutos después de la reunión están saltando por todos lados, riéndose y llamando la atención sobre ellos mismos. ¿Qué pasó con aquellos días en que la convicción caía tan fuerte sobre los pecadores que quedaban en el suelo paralizados por horas o clamando por que Dios tuviera misericordia de sus almas pues sabían que estaban cerca al infierno? Hoy, nuestros tales llamados santos se ríen de la convicción. El Espíritu Santo no es el que está trabajando, es un espíritu inmundo. En la mayoría, es Babilonia-  un sistema religioso sin Dios que no tiene tiempo para el Señor de las Escrituras.

Como acabamos de establecer, el prostituto opera en el ámbito de la carne, y la carne es el mundo de las emociones. Los emocionales son sensibles y de mal humor- usted tiene miedo hasta de hablarles. Cualquier palabra es malinterpretada como un ataque a su carácter. Una persona de éstas no sabe nada sobre lo que es ser un esclavo de Cristo- con todos sus derechos entregados a Dios. ¿Cómo podríamos esperar avivamiento con esta clase de ministerio?

¿Para qué queremos avivamiento- para conseguir dinero, fama, reconocimiento? Si esa es nuestra motivación, entonces nosotros también estamos bajo la misma ley de la selva como lo está todo el resto del mundo en esta malvada y perversa generación. Llega el momento en el cual debemos estar hartos de estos depravados animales religiosos quienes son movidos por nada más que por su propia lujuria y deseos y quienes no tienen una sombra de gracia en sus corazones. ¿Pero quién va a hablar? ¿Quién hará algo por este desastre? ¿Quién pondrá su vida en la línea de batalla por la Verdad del Evangelio?

IV.- ¿Cómo debemos reaccionar?

El ministro ordenado por los hombres es un actor o un hipócrita, un cobrador de impuestos y una prostituta. Nosotros estamos rodeados de estos ministerios, y si usted no conoce a nadie así, considérese bendecido. Yo creo que debemos reaccionar con lágrimas. Dios llamó a los ministros en los días de Joel a llorar por arrepentimiento del estado de los asuntos religiosos. Debemos llorar. Y yo también entiendo que debemos enojarnos. El enojo, contrario a la opinión común, no es pecado. Moisés se enojó. El mismo Jesús se enojó. La razón por la cual no creemos más en el enojo es porque hemos sacado la ira de Dios de nuestros libros teológicos. Pablo dijo, “Airaos, pero no pequéis” (Efesios 4:26); él no dijo, “no se enojen”. Enojo, o ira, por el motivo incorrecto si es pecado; pero un celo apasionado por la gloria de Dios es la señal más sana de una vida espiritual que haya existido. La ira es una herramienta muy poderosa que quema nuestros huesos. Lutero ardía con celo santo en contra de la superstición católica y la adoración de ídolos y la Reforma Protestante fue el resultado. Debemos tomar el pecado del cuello y ahorcar la vida fuera de él. Y  nuestras vidas deben reflejar lo que creemos. Un discípulo comprometido no puede permanecer indiferente. El rey Jehú exclamó, “Ven conmigo, y verás mi celo por el Señor” (2 de Reyes 10:16) y él expulsó de la tierra la adoración a Baal. Los días de Acán están nombrados cuando hay un pueblo hambriento por la realidad de Dios. Cuando llegue el avivamiento, cuando el pueblo de Dios tenga sed  nuevamente por un movimiento genuino del Espíritu, sólo entonces los púlpitos serán purgados. La razón por la cual tenemos tantos mensajeros inicuos en el púlpito es porque así nos gusta y así lo queremos.

Judas habla de apostasía, pero justo antes de terminar su epístola, aconseja a los verdaderos siervos de Dios. Cuando estén rodeados de actores, hipócritas, cobradores de impuestos y prostitutas, él dice, “Pero vosotros, amados, edificándoos sobre vuestra santísima fe, orando en el Espíritu Santo, conservaos en el amor de Dios, esperando la misericordia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo para vida eterna” (Judas 20-21). Nuestra única esperanza de supervivencia espiritual es caminar hacia adelante en una fe santa- no en una fe hipócrita- una santísima fe. Una fe piadosa dice no al pecado en cualquier esquina. Una fe santa nos guía a una vida santa, pura y separada para la gloria de Dios. Una fe santa está caracterizada por un temor vivo de Dios, un amor apasionado por Él y un profundo deseo por Su gloria.

Debemos habitar en la plenitud del Espíritu Santo, ahí es donde descansa el secreto de nuestro denuedo y santidad. Un pueblo santo camina bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo. Si otros van a ser ordenados ministros por mano de hombres, asegúrese que usted no sea uno de ellos. Permanezca en el santo amor del Señor y regocíjese en esa misericordia que le dirige hacia la vida eterna. Predique un buen Evangelio, llame al pecado por su nombre y muéstreles a las personas en dónde se encuentran con respecto a Dios. Babilonia está cayendo. Sólo aquello que ha sido nacido de Dios vencerá en el día de la tribulación.

Conclusión

Para concluir, repito mi propuesta inicial- que la única y más grande maldición que puede venir sobre una nación que ha conocido el Evangelio el algo llamado ministerio hecho por mano de hombres. Tal ministerio es la más grande maldición que está evitando que multitudes conozcan la realidad de Dios. El hipócrita recibirá su recompensa- de hecho, ya la ha recibido. Perecerá pronto. El cobrador de impuestos encontrará sus riquezas eternas en el lago de fuego y azufre. El humo de la prostituta inmunda se levantará para siempre (Apocalipsis 19:3). El ministerio hecho por mano de hombres está reprobado, depravado y rechazado por el Dios santo. La gloria de Dios permanecerá para siempre y todo lo demás contradictorio a ella verá pronto su fin.

Dios levantará pastores piadosos, ministros ordenados por Dios en medio de toda esta confusión y enfermedad causada por el ministerio hecho por mano de hombres. Vuelva a la oración. Regrese a la Palabra de Dios. Cristo nos guiará atravesando todo tipo de obstáculos y dificultades, grandes o pequeñas, “Y levantaré sobre ellas un Pastor, y Él las apacentará; a mi siervo David, Él las apacentará, y Él les será por Pastor” (Ezequiel 34:23). ¿Es usted un ministro ordenado por mano de hombre o es usted un ministro ordenado por Dios? ¿Corre por su propia cuenta o fue usted enviado por Dios? Brille con la gloria de Cristo. Viva como un Cristiano, en público y en privado. Calvino dijo que sería mejor para el predicador caerse y romperse el cuello antes de llegar al púlpito, si no iba a vivir lo que predicara.

¡Sea santo, sea fiel y ame al Señor por encima de todas las cosas! Ésta es la hora para que ministros ordenados por Dios se levanten para poner de rodillas esta suciedad de ministerio hecho por mano de hombres.

Introduction

In times of revival and refreshing for the church, the people of God rejoice in the majesty and splendour of their great God and Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. He becomes All in all. God sends men to the pulpit who exalt the excellencies and glories of the Triune God- Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Richard Sibbes wrote, “If a man has the Spirit of God, his way of life will be upward and heavenly; his mind is on the things of God, and he does not grovel here below”.¹ That’s as true for the preacher as it is for the believer. When true Biblical revival comes, the people of God are blessed with a God-ordained ministry: God-centred, God-obeying and God-glorifying.

But the antithesis of God-ordained ministry is man-made ministry. Keith Daniel told us back in 2007 that, “the single greatest tragedy this world faces today is compromising Christianity”. I said ‘amen’ when I heard that statement from the man of God: never have truer words been spoken. And I would propose to you in this hour that the single greatest curse that can come upon any land that has ever known the Gospel is something by the name of man-made ministry. It has spread like a deadly plague and is everywhere to be found in our 21^st century churches.

This message has been birthed out of much pain, tears, heart-felt sorrow and anger. If you’ve come here for a ‘tickle-your-ears’, ‘feel-good’, ‘ego-soothing’, ‘bless-me’, ‘man-centred’ message, you can leave right now. I haven’t come here to preach to goats; I’ve got no time for tares. I’m here to speak to men and women that love God and that are genuinely concerned about the glory of the living God in this generation.

In this sermon, I’m going to obey the rule of medical science- that before you heal the wound and apply ointment to it, you’ve got to expose and analyse it for what it is. God is a promoter of hard-realism. So we’re going to open our Bibles in the book of Jude and read the first four verses. If you please, you can accompany me there.²

Jude

The whole theme of the book of Jude is summed up in one word: apostasy. The stench of decadence is potently sensed throughout the reading of this divinely-inspired epistle. It’s the only book of the New Testament exclusively dedicated to warning the saints of God about the spiritual and moral depravity that was to face the church before Christ’s return. Its message is still as clear, powerful and relevant as when it was first penned.

From the passage we’ve just looked at, Jude, who we believe to be one of the physical brothers of Jesus, is urged to exhort the saints to contend earnestly for the faith because of the certain men who had “crept in unawares”- ungodly men, who turned God’s grace into a licence for sin, and who denied the Lord Jesus Christ with their sham of a life. They were man-made ministers who preached a man-made message.

I want to show you today from the Scriptures that a man-made minister is three things. Number one, he is an actor or a hypocrite. Number two, he is a tax-collector. Number three, he is a prostitute. And after our analysis of man-made ministry I will suggest how we must deal with such nonsense in this perverse and degenerate age.

Let us pray, that God may give us light and revelation, regarding His Word on this day.

I.- An actor/ a hypocrite “certain men crept in unawares” (v. 3)

The man-made minister is an actor or a hypocrite, a tax-collector and a prostitute. In first place, let’s talk about an actor or a hypocrite. Acting in its purest form is the art of deception and hypocrisy. The person that acts pretends to be something or someone that he is not. If a preacher arrived at the door of a church and proclaimed, “I am a false prophet, let me in the pulpit!” Who would be foolish enough to grant his request? The man-made minister with a man-made Gospel comes in secretly. Verse 3 mentions certain men “crept in unawares”. The threat from outside of the church was never as nearly as dangerous as the perversion that rose up from within. They’ll come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. Paul said to the Ephesians, “I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them” (Acts 20:29-30). The wolf is a hypocrite- he pretends to be a sheep. He is an actor.

If there was anything Jesus condemned more than anything else in His ministry, it was faked religion- a spurious spirituality. He reserved his heaviest threats for the pretenders, the actors and the hypocrites. In Matthew 6 He talks of actors- people who pray to be heard, fast to be admired and give to be seen. Jesus has no time for actors or anyone else who messes about with that nonsense. He said, “They’ve already got their recompense!” The hypocrite always does things to be seen and noticed. If the actor’s not the centre of attention, he’ll never be happy- he’ll huff and he’ll puff and he´ll let everyone else know all about it. The whole thrust of his life is self-centred; his whole ministry is to get him reputation, fame, riches and the respect of many. He acts holy when he has to, but his mask of righteousness is a cheap gloss over a wasted life of foolishness and lightness. Clowns wear masks, and you’re not meant to take them seriously. The Bible says that the hypocrites hope will perish (Job 8:13).

He would do anything to get into the pulpit, and when he gets there, his performance turns into his god. He learns off every action, he knows when to raise his hands and when to let them down, he knows where to lay stress with his voice so as to get a ‘hallelujah’, ‘amen’ or a round of applause from the listeners. He moves the masses with ease and knows all the tricks in the book. They told an evangelist friend of mine, “If you want to look real spiritual. Call the folk down to the altar and get them to raise their hands. With their hands up, they’re off balance, so just push their forehead and they’ll fall down!” Deception, hypocrisy, sham, filth- and all in the name of Almighty God! If God wants a man to fall to the ground with a sense of His glory, He can do it, not man!

The actor pretends to be something he’s not. He preaches a spirituality that he doesn’t have. He’s bankrupt. The actor also is out of contact with reality. He lives in a different world where he’s the centre and God is his little puppet. The actor doesn’t lament the lack of holiness and power in the church, because the church is just there to serve his purposes- not God’s. Hell may be closing in around his generation, but he continues to play his ‘happy-clappy’ religious games with a big grin on his face. He can’t discern the state of things because he’s not awake. He’s been seduced into his role that leaves him oblivious to all else around him.

The word of God is a mighty burden that crushes the true man or woman of God. Malachi 1:1 reads, “The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi”. That same burden came unto Habakkuk, Zechariah, Nahum and all of the prophets. The prophetic word is a crushing weight upon the shoulders of the servant of the Lord that he is unable to resist. It rests upon him a deadly python that is slowly choking him to death. It must be cast off!

The word must be preached! It cannot be held back! It won’t let you sleep at night. It consumes the man of God and eats him up. Jeremiah couldn’t hold the fire back. Amos had no other option but to preach the heavy burden of the word of the Lord. It’s a word of holiness, purity and repentance. When the God-ordained minister preaches, conviction falls. But then the actor steps into the pulpit to finish the meeting off with a feel-good song so that nobody goes home with tears in their ears and a broken heart. After all, we don’t want anyone upset: do we?

The true Spirit-led slave of Christ sees the mess that needs undoing, and it causes him pain. The actor doesn’t- his flashy sunglasses block his vision. He’s not aware of the wound that needs treating. Such a person isn’t willing to lay their life on the line to be used by God. He cries, “Peace, peace” and there is no peace. “They have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly” (Jeremiah 8:11). They say all is well when all is but well. They say we’re in revival when we’ve the same amount of pregnant teenage girls in the church as outside of it. The crime rate is higher than ever! Our prisons are filled to overflowing. Who knows what percentage of believers are addicted to porn? And in the midst of it all, they cry- revival, revival, revival! This isn’t revival! If this is revival, I don’t want it! If it were revival, our streets would be different. Things would change. Families would start to function again! People would start to live right, dress right, talk right and walk right. The fear of God would fall upon our cities.

I’ve seen so called servants of God talking about the dangers they face on the mission field, telling sad stories to swindle the money out of people- and once there, they spend all year eating ice-cream and chatting on the Internet, flirting about with any young looking thing they come across. Actors! Hypocrites! Our age calls for fire-filled saints!

II.- A tax-collector “they have... ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward” (v. 11)

The man-made minister is an actor. He pretends to be something he’s not, and as a consequence, he lives out of touch with reality. The man-made minister is a tax-collector. Jude 11 reads, “they have... ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward”. The term “ran greedily after” implies that nothing will stop him in his egoistic quest. It’s the same word used when Acts 1:18 speaks of Judas’ bowels “gushing out”. Nothing could hold them back. A tax-collector will use you for what he can get from you. You’re a means for his end. He loves money and nothing else. He continually seeks his own benefit. 2 Peter 2:3 warns, “Through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you”.

Their only interest is to feed themselves, and they will take advantage of the sheep to do so. Their whole message is one that will get the financial support of the people- prosperity, happiness, healing, health and wealth. He just tells the people what they want to hear. Promise a trouble-free life, success and promotion- and sit back and watch the thousands flock in! Any fool can preach that nonsense! You don’t have to be born again to share those principles. That’s the world’s way- no effort, no pain and no commitment. Just confess something positively, and see it come to pass. Such preachers don’t seek God; they seek goods. Tax-collectors in Biblical times took more than was due. They were hated because they conned their own people. Rome put a price on every head, and the tax-collectors didn’t only take what was owed to Rome, but added on a little something for their own welfare too. The moment Jesus called Matthew, he left that business behind. Salvation had come! He was a disciple of Christ! No more lies; no more cheating; no more taking advantage of helpless people. The first thing he did when he started to follow Jesus was to make him a great supper- how could it be? Matthew the tax-collector! The one that robbed his own! Now he puts on a feast for His Master. Selfishness had been struck dead in his heart. His was another kingdom- He was translated into the kingdom of light, the joy of following Christ. Zacchaeus was another one- although he had more authority than Matthew. He was “the chief among the publicans” (Luke 19:2). The tax-collectors gave account to him. And guess what? “He was rich” (v. 2). But when salvation came to his house, the first thing he said was, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold” (Luke 19:8). True repentance works restitution. Zacchaeus showed by the fruit of repentance that he had come into a saving relationship with Christ. There are two kingdoms- the world or heaven. Which do you serve? Which do you live for? Which do you dream about?

Christ talked so much about money because he know it was the biggest threat to the true worship of God. “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). I can’t remember the last time I heard a sermon on that passage in the modern church. You tell parent’s they’re kids aren’t behaving right in school, and they couldn’t care less. But tell them that they’re wasting their money if their kids behave like that, then their ears prick up and take notice. The reason 95% of people woke up this morning in this nation is to go and make money. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with riches, but what’s dangerous is when that becomes our motive in life over God.

The servant of Christ is generous because he has an eternal perspective. But the tax-collector is focused on the here and now. He opens doors for himself, promotes himself and preaches for popularity. His is a humanistic religion- he doesn’t preach because he’s burning with a ‘thus saith the Lord’ but because he knows there’s a generous offering coming after his sermon. He’s only interested in preaching to big numbers, although he’ll use small flocks to get to his desired destination. He builds his own kingdom, not God’s. Haggai 1:4, “Is it time for you, o ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house lie waste? Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts: consider your ways”. Such a preacher would sell his soul to get on TV or to have his message projected online. They’ll say anything; go anywhere; shake anybody’s hand, just to get a few dirty bank notes in their pocket. Pride is such a subtle thing that it can become the driving force of any preacher’s life: anything for a name! Anything for fame! Anything for riches! Anything to get a big name in the preaching industry!

How many friendships and families have been forsaken in the fight for fame? And at the end of the day, where does it get you? What do you achieve? What good will the whole world do for you if you lose your soul? Will your CD ministry save you on Judgment Day?

In stead of time spent in prayer, the 21^st century church is wasting her time in planning schemes and strategies in an attempt to get somewhere. But the tragedy is that to get somewhere without God is to get nowhere! 2 Peter 2:15 says, “which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness”. The wages of unrighteousness will lead you astray; the wages of righteousness will lead to live everlasting and the glory of the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.

III.- A prostitute “these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion” (v. 8)

The man-made minister is an actor or a hypocrite, a tax-collector and a prostitute. Like Sodom and Gomorrah, the man-made minister defiles the flesh. He speaks perverted words and lives a perverted life. Prostitutes earn their cash in bed, disgracing themselves and those they infect. Any type of sexual conduct outside of marriage is completely forbidden by the Bible. Prostitutes live on bed, so they’re always half-asleep. God spoke against the false prophets of Jeremiah’s day, “I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed!” (Jeremiah 23:25). When dreams and so-called new revelations are exalted over the authority of the Holy Scripture, you can write Ichabod over such a movement- “the glory has departed” (1 Samuel 4:21). If your vision or dream doesn’t harmonize with the healthy doctrine of the Scripture, then you can forget all about it.

The prostitute is sedated and drugged, half-asleep, has been with a thousand partners and is plagued with disease. They live at night because the darkness hates the light. The straight preaching of the Word of God is the most hated thing in the carnal heart. Sinners cannot stand the awesomeness of a holy God. People hide in the dark, and the man-made minister hides a secret life of sin that he keeps quiet from everyone else. He’s covering up a life of iniquity that he refuses to deal with in the light of God’s Word.

We long for holiness in the church in days when dignity is not even respected. I’ve seen women in meetings dressed up like a piece of meat, leaving nothing to the imagination. You’d expect that from pagans on the street, but in the church of the living God? The only thing I’ve ever seen getting excited about a piece of meat is a dog- so why in the name of Almighty God do you dress to attract the hounds of hell? Jesus told the prostitute to go and sin no more (John 8:11)!

There’s nothing complicated about holiness- it’s the most practical thing imaginable. It’s not about sitting on the top of a pole or in the middle of a desert for ten years without saying anything and having scores of mystical visions- true holiness is walking in the fruit of the Holy Ghost, reflecting the love and holiness of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. A man of God will go to the right places and act right, and the same goes for women of the Lord. It’s that simple. It’s not emotionalism. That’s the realm of the prostitute and the flesh. I have seen men preach with sway and emotion, moving the listeners and gaining the applause of all around- but in private, their lives were far from praiseworthy.

The ex-Episcopalian priest John Shelby Spong is teaching that the Apostle Paul was a repressed homosexual. When you get that twisted, when homosexual theology is a growing movement- how far can we be from the Second Coming of Christ?

Anything goes in the prostitute church. Protest is taken out of Protestant. The prostitute lies down and takes anything given to her. If ever there’s a picture of our religious situation, that’s it. Prostitutes put a price on their heads. I know of so-called men of God who will only preach in places where they’re promised thousands of pounds. The pastors of Juarez (Mexico) told me no-one goes to preach there anymore- why not? Because it’s dangerous, there’s no money and no popularity for the preacher.

The prostitute deals with the flesh. Animals act by instinct and so it is with the sensual who have not the Spirit (Jude 19). So-called believers whose eyes cannot cease from sin bring every type of worldliness and foolishness into the church. We’ve every type of gimmick and publicity stunt- flashy lights, churches designed like pubs, disco-type praise music and bright colours. Christian magazines have front covers that look pornographic! Even the ungodly are laughing at us! If you use that garbage to bring people into the church, then you’ve got to use that same rubbish to keep them there. I’ve got some news for you: the only attraction to the church of the Lord is the cross of Jesus Christ- nothing more, nothing less. And if you don’t come upon the ground of the cross, you have no place here. The cross kills off the odour of this word.

Where did we learn to switch spirituality off? Folk come to the altar with tears in the eyes and five minutes after the meeting they’re jumping all around the place, laughing and calling attention to themselves. Whatever happened to the days when conviction fell so strongly upon sinners that they lay paralysed for hours or screamed out for God to have mercy on their soul because they knew hell was closing in on them? Today, our so called saints laugh off conviction. There’s no Holy Spirit at work; it’s an unholy spirit. It’s Babylon for the most part- a godless religious system that has no time for the Lord of the Scriptures.

As we’ve just established, the prostitute operates in the realm of the flesh, and the flesh is the world of emotions. The emotional are touchy and moody- you’re afraid of speaking to them. Every word is misinterpreted as an assault on their character. Such a person doesn’t know anything about being a slave of Christ- with all their rights giving up to God. How can we expect revival with this type of ministry?

Why do we want revival- for money, fame, recognition? If that’s our motive, then we’re just under the same law of the jungle as everybody else in this wicked and perverse generation. There comes a time when we have to get fed up with these vicious religious animals who are moved by nothing else but their own lusts and desires and who don’t have a shadow of grace in the hearts. But who’s going to speak out? Who’s going to do something about the mess? Who’s going to put their life on the line for the Truth of the Gospel?

IV.- How must we react?

The man-made minister is an actor or a hypocrite, a tax-collector and a prostitute. We are surrounded by such ministries, and if you don’t know anyone like that, then count yourself blessed. I believe we must react with tears. God called the ministers to weep in Joel’s day for repentance over the religious state of affairs. We must weep. And I also understand that we must get angry. Anger, contrary to common opinion, is not a sin. Moses got angry. Christ Himself was angry. The reason we don’t believe in anger any longer is because we’ve taken the wrath of God out of our theological textbooks. Paul said, “Be ye angry, and sin not” (Ephesians 4:26); he didn’t say, “Don’t get angry”. Anger for the wrong purpose is sin; but a zealous passion for the glory of God is the healthiest sign of spiritual life that ever existed. Anger is a powerful tool that burns in our bones. Luther burned with holy wrath against catholic superstition and idol-worship, and the Protestant Reformation was the result. We’ve got to take sin by the throat and choke the life out of the thing. And our lives must reflect what we believe. A committed disciple cannot remain indifferent. King Jehu exclaimed, “Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord” (2 Kings 10:16) and he expelled the worship of Baal out of the land. Achan’s days are numbered when there is a people hungry for the reality of God. When revival comes, when God’s people get thirsty again for a genuine moving of the Spirit, then the pulpits will be cleansed. The reason we have so many ungodly messengers in the pulpit is because we love to have it so.

Jude speaks of apostasy, but just before finishing his epistle he gives some advice to the true servants of the Lord. When surrounded by actors, hypocrites, tax-collectors and prostitutes, he says, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 20-21). Our only hope of spiritual survival is to walk ahead in a holy faith- not a hypocritical faith- a holy faith. A godly faith says no to sin at every corner. A holy faith leads to a holy, pure life separated for the glory of God. A holy faith is characterized by a lively fear of God, a passionate love for Him and a profound desire for His glory.

We must abide in the fullness of the Holy Ghost, that’s where the secret of our boldness and holiness lies. A holy people walk in the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If others are going to be man-made ministers, make sure you are not. Abide in the holy love of God and rejoice in that mercy that leads to eternal life. Preach a good Gospel, call sin by its name and show people where they’re at with God. Babylon is coming down. Only that which has been birthed of God will overcome in the day of tribulation.

Conclusion

By means of conclusion, I repeat my initial proposal- that the single greatest curse that can come upon any land that has ever known the Gospel is something by the name of man-made ministry. Man-made ministry is the greatest curse that is keeping multitudes from the reality of God. The hypocrite will get his reward- in fact, he’s already got it. It is soon to perish. The tax-collector will find his eternal riches in the lake of fire and brimstone. The smoke of the filthy prostitute will rise up forever more (Revelation 19:3). Man-made ministry is reprobate, depraved and rejected of a holy God. God’s glory will stand forevermore and anything contradictory to that will soon see its end.

God will raise up godly shepherds, God-ordained ministers in the midst of this growing confusion and disease of man-made ministry. Get back to prayer. Get back to the Word of God. Christ will guide us through thick and thin, “I will set up one Shepherd over them, and He shall feed them, even my servant David; He shall feed them, and He shall be their Shepherd” (Ezekiel 34:23). Are you a man-made minister or a God-ordained minister? Did you run by your own account, or were you sent by God? Shine with the glory of Christ. Live like a Christian, in public and in private. Calvin said it would be better for the preacher to fall down and break his neck before getting into the pulpit, if he wasn’t going to live what he preached.

Be holy, be faithful and love God above all things! It’s the hour for God-ordained saints to arise to bring this man-made dirt to its knees.

A HOLY MAN IS A HUMBLE MAN

   "Learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart" (Matt. 11:29 KJV).

The holiest, most powerful voice that ever spoke described himself as "meek and lowly in heart." Why begin a message on holiness with a quote concerning humility? Simply because holiness is the product of grace and God gives grace only to the humble.

    It is vital we understand that Jesus did not condemn sinners; He condemn hypocrites. A hypocrite is a person who excuses his own sin while condemning the sis of another. He is not merely "two-faced", for even the best of us must work at single-mindedness in all instances. A hypocrite, therefore, is one who refuses to admit he is, at times, two-faced, thereby pretending a righteousness he fails to live.

    Indeed, the hypocrite does not discern his hypocrisy, for he cannot perceive flaws within himself. Rarely does he actually deal with the corruption in his heart. Since he seeks no mercy, he has no mercy to give; since he is always under God's judgement, judging is what comes through him.

    We cannot remain hypocrites and at the same time find holiness. Therefore, the first step we truly take toward sanctification is to admit we are not as holy as we would like to appear. This first step is called humility.

    In our desire to know God, we must discern this about the Almighty: He resists the proud but His grace is drawn to the humble. Humility brings grace to our need, and grace alone can change our hearts. Humility, therefore, is the substructure of transformation. It is the essence of all virtues.

    At some phase in each of our lives, we all will be confronted with the impurities of our hearts. The Holy Spirit reveals our sinfulness, not to condemn us but to establish humility and deepen the knowledge of our personal need for grace. It is at this crossroad that both holy men and hypocrites are bred. Those who become holy see their need and fall prostrate before God for deliverance. Those who become hypocrites are they who, in seeing their sin, excuse it and thus remain intact. Though all men must eventually stand at this junction, few are they who embrace the voice of truth; few are they indeed who will walk humbly toward true holiness.

    Therefore, sanctification starts not with rules but with the forsaking of pride. Purity begins with our determined refusal to hide from the condition of our hearts. Out of self-discovery comes forth humility, and in meekness true holiness grows.

    If we are not enlightened to the depravity of our old nature, we become ""Christian Pharisees", hypocrites, full of contempt and self-righteousness. Did not our Master warn of those who, "trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt" (Luke 18:9) ? Every time we judge another Christian, we do so with an attitude of self-righteousness. Each time we criticize another church, contempt is the motive behind our words. The irony of our Christianity is that so many churches look upon each other with identical attitudes of superiority! The modern church has become overstocked with those who, thinking they were holy, have become the exact opposite of holiness because they so lack humility!

    Yet The humility we seek is drawn from a well that goes deeper than the awareness of our needs. Even in times of spiritual fullness, we must delight in weakness, knowing all strenght is the product of God's grace. The humility we hope to find must go beyond the pattern of living proud lives, interrupted momentarily by intervals of self-abasement. Meekness mus become our way of life. Like Jesus, we must delight in becoming "lowly in heart". Like Jesus, his disciples are humble by choice.

ANYONE CAN JUDGE, BUT CAN YOU SAVE?

    Hypocrites love to judge; it makes them feel superior. But it shall not be so with you. You mist seek earnestly for lowliness of heart. Many zealous but proud Christians failed to reach holiness because they presumed they were called to judge others.

    Jesus Christ did not come to condemn the world but to save the world. Anyone can pass judgment, but can they save? Can they lay down their lives in love, intercession and faith for the one judged? Can they target an area of need and, rather than criticizing, fast and pray, asking God to supply the very virtue they feel is lacking? And then, can they persevere in love-motivated prayer until that fallen area blooms in godliness? Such is the life Christ commands we follow!

    To judge after the flesh requires but one eye and a carnal mind. On the other hand, it takes the loving faithfulness of Christ to redeem and save. One act of His love revealed through us will do more to warm cold hearts than the sum of all our pompous criticisms. Therefore, grow in love, excel in mercy, and you will have a clearer perception into the essence of holiness, for it is the nature of God, who is love.

    One may argue, "But Jesus condemned sin". Yes, and we condemn sin also, but the sin we must condemn first is the sin of judging others, for it obscures our vision from discerning sin in ourselves! (Matt. 7:5) Understand this: We will never become holy by criticizing others; nor is anyone brought nearer to God through finding fault!

    If we are honestly pursuing our sanctification, we will soon discover we have no time for judging others. Indeed, being in need of mercy, we will seek eagerly for opportunities to be merciful to others.

    Yes, the Scriptures tells us that Jesus judge men in certain situations, but His motive was always to save. His love was perfectly committed to the one He judged. When our love toward another is such that we can honestly say, like Christ, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you"(Heb. 13:5), our powers of discernment will be likewise perfected; for it is love alone that gives us pure motives in judgement (1 John 4:16-17).

    Do you still insist on finding fault? Beware, Christ's standard of judgment is high: "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone" (John 8:7). Indeed, speak out against unrighteouness but be motivated by the love of Jesus. Remember, it is written, "While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Rom. 5:8). In the kingdom of God, unless you are first committed to die for people, you are not permitted to judge them.

    It is also important to note that the ears which listen to gossip or criticisms are as guilty as the mouth that speaks it. Do not contribute to such sins. Instead, stop the offender from speaking and entreat him to intercede, as Jesus does, for that person or situation. Your ears are holy, do not let them come into agreement with the accuser of the brethren (Rev.12:10).

    Remember, Christ did not condemn sinners, He condemned hypocrites. He numbered Himself with sinners- bearing our sins and sorrows (Isa. 53). This is the humility we are seeking. Indeed, holiness shines brightly through the meek and lowly heart.
